Gabby Starr: Protecting Charlotte’s Future, One Family at a Time
By Nell Thomas | Strolling Ballantyne
When you think about life insurance and financial planning, words like “personal,” “warm,” and “approachable” might not immediately spring to mind. Yet that’s precisely how Gabby Sarah Starr at Transamerica Agency Network in Charlotte, NC, is redefining the industry. From her comfortable office on Whitehall Park Drive, Gabby has turned the typically dry conversation around insurance into meaningful discussions about protecting and enhancing people’s lives.
Gabby’s journey to financial planning wasn’t conventional. Originally from Eastern North Carolina, where her father was a school superintendent, she moved to Charlotte 22 years ago after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill. Initially pursuing a career in education—with a BA in Psychology and a Master’s in School Counseling—Gabby served both Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Union County for six years. But a calling toward community-oriented financial guidance drew her to Transamerica, where she now combines her educational expertise with financial wisdom.
“Everyone should be protected from life’s unexpected turns,” Gabby explains. She underscores a crucial but overlooked fact: while only 11% of people have a long-term care plan, approximately two-thirds will need one. Her mission is clear—educate and empower. As a single mom to two teenagers, ages 16 and 13, Gabby understands the unique pressures faced by families today. She particularly champions single mothers, aiming to equip them with practical financial tools and guidance.

What sets Gabby apart is her profound belief that sales are really about service. She prioritizes accessibility, actively encouraging clients to reach out whenever they have questions or concerns. Beyond her role at Transamerica—one of over 100 national offices—Gabby fosters local business connections through a free networking group in Weddington. Her philosophy? “To be successful, people must like you, trust you, and find you credible.”
This philosophy has guided her transition from recruiter and social media specialist into a successful insurance sales career, with plans to enter management by June 2025. Gabby’s ultimate goal is to build a dynamic team of strong, independent women who share her passion for community education and financial empowerment.
For Gabby, success is deeply personal. She regularly volunteers locally, determined to instill in her children a sense of gratitude and community responsibility. It’s a spirit that permeates her work every day.
