Monty the Giant Schnauzer claimed the prestigious Best in Show title at the Westminster Dog Show on February 11, 2025. Among fierce competitors including a whippet, a Skye terrier, and a German shepherd, Monty stood out with his elegant beard and poised demeanor.
At 5 years old, Monty was already recognized as the top dog nationally, having accumulated significant points in previous shows. This was his third consecutive appearance in the finals, making his victory a moment of redemption. Katie Bernardin, his handler and co-owner, was visibly moved during the award ceremony, highlighting the deep emotional connections formed in competitive dog showing.
Despite spirited efforts from other finalists like Bourbon the whippet and Mercedes the German shepherd, it was the well-coiffed Monty who captured both the judge’s and the audience’s hearts. Post-win, Monty is set for a quieter, playful life back home in Chaplin, Connecticut, where he enjoys his favorite pastime with soccer balls.
Judge Paula Nykiel highlighted Monty’s exemplary features which resonate well with the breed’s standards. Bernardin urges potential Giant Schnauzer owners to consider the breed’s demanding nature before making any decisions, emphasizing their strong will and physical strength.
This year’s competition was not without its unique contenders. The terrier group presented a varied lot, but it was the Skye terrier, Archer, who wowed the ground with his unique looks and sheer determination.
Giant Schnauzers are noted for their robust build and historically, they haven’t clinched the Best in Show title since Josh, a Newfoundland, back in 2004. Monty’s win serves not only as a personal victory but a momentous occasion for the breed.
