Already an iconic destination, the Center’s plans include new indoor and outdoor facilities, further cementing its reputation as a top-tier outdoor adventure hub.

Why It Matters

As both a local gem and a regional economic powerhouse, the Whitewater Center’s 2024 visitor numbers reached 1.4 million, and its economic contributions totaled a staggering $270 million, according to a Virginia Tech study. Located just outside downtown Charlotte, this Olympic training site is known for its adrenaline-pumping activities and serene escapes, offering whitewater rafting, flat-water kayaking, 40 miles of hiking and biking trails, rock climbing, zip-lining, free solo climbing, live music, races, yoga, and dining.

The Center isn’t slowing down. Its $25 million expansion aims to elevate the outdoor experience with:

The Center’s 2024 expansions included:

• A 70-acre off-leash dog park: Providing a massive space for pups and their humans to explore.
• Overlook Barn: A stunning new event space designed to host everything from weddings to corporate retreats.

Beyond Charlotte: A Growing Footprint

The Whitewater Center has expanded far beyond its Charlotte roots with properties across the Carolinas and Virginia:

1. Santee: A 323-acre retreat on the Cooper River in Huger, South Carolina.
2. Windfall: A 450-acre retreat straddling the North Carolina and Virginia mountains.
3. Pisgah: A 6-acre lodge in the Pisgah National Forest, providing a basecamp for exploring one of North Carolina’s most beloved outdoor regions.
4. Bike Ranch: Scheduled to open this spring in Abingdon, Virginia. This 500-acre center will kick off with 15 miles of trails and expand to around 50 miles.

Additionally, there’s chatter about an estimated $350 million project in Raleigh, North Carolina, though Wise declined to share specifics.
