About Balanced Life K9

Balanced Life K9 is a one-trainer dog training company based in Matthews and serving the Ballantyne and greater Charlotte area. Its founder, Cranston Blanks, has been in the industry since 2008, and the business is deliberately small.

That is the whole design. After fifteen years of opening and running franchise locations in Charlotte, Columbia, Wilmington and Cincinnati, he came home and built something that trades volume for attention. He is a solo operation for now, which is what lets him focus on quality rather than headcount.

His premise is that most training problems are relationship problems. He works on the dog, but he spends more of his effort on the owner, because the owner is who the dog goes home with.

What You Get

What You Get Why It Matters
Owner training, not just dog training The emphasis is on the human and dog relationship, because that is what makes the work hold after he leaves.
In-home board and train A limited-space program including real-world outings rather than drills in a facility.
Full behavioral range Basic obedience through reactivity, aggression, and off-leash reliability.
Free lifetime support Ongoing help through the dog's life, including as the owner's circumstances change.

Meet Cranston Blanks

Cranston moved to Charlotte at six months old and grew up off Providence Road with his parents and twin sister. He went to N.C. State for two years, then transferred to Appalachian State, graduating with a major in health promotion and a minor in psychology. After several years in work that did not inspire him, he followed the thing that did and went into dog training in 2008.

He joined a local company and helped grow it into a national franchise operation of more than a hundred locations, training dogs, owners, other trainers and managers along the way. He spent his last six years in the system running its top-performing location, in Cincinnati.

His mother died in January. He came back to Charlotte to be closer to his father, and once here decided to leave the franchise world and bring the experience home in a more personal form. His father, sister, brother-in-law and nephew are all still in Charlotte.

In Their Words

He describes training as a lifestyle made of three parts: work, rest and play. His argument is that a dog with genuine off-leash reliability gets a bigger life, not a smaller one, and that most owners have not pictured how much freedom is actually available to them.

The case he returns to is an older couple in Columbia, the Fortsons, who adopted a sweet bully-breed named Maya with some dog-reactivity and trouble regulating her emotions. Without addressing it, they were not going to be able to keep her. A three-week board and train, lessons with the couple during the program, a long take-home session and several follow-ups got Maya settled into their household for good. He credits their consistency after he left as the reason it stuck.
