About Irena Violin
Irena Benak picked up the violin at six, in Berlin. A year later she entered her first competition, and from there, in her words, music "became much more than something I simply enjoyed. It became the path I wanted to follow."
She describes the path that followed as years of classical training, orchestra performances, large stages, television appearances and many other musical projects. Less than a year after moving to the United States, she says, it took her to the White House, where she performed in September 2024.
Today, as Irena Violin, she plays live performances and special events, pairing that classical background with what she calls "a modern, expressive performance style."
Meet Irena Benak
Her move to Charlotte was, as she puts it, "completely unexpected." After a music tour in Canada, she met the man who would become her husband at a concert in Serbia. A few months later she came to Charlotte to visit him, and the visit became a new chapter. She stayed, they married, and Charlotte became home. The couple now has a baby daughter.
"I came here with years of experience performing internationally, but I also had to build my name again in a new country and a new community," she says. "I'm very grateful for how warmly Charlotte has welcomed me."

In Her Words
On the White House: "Walking through the gates, being welcomed by the Marines, and realizing where I was felt almost surreal." It made her stop and think about how far the violin had taken her, "from starting as a six-year-old girl in Berlin to performing in one of the most recognizable places in the world."
Her advice to other musicians: "Practice until you know your instrument, but when you step on stage, stop thinking about perfection and communicate something. People may not remember every note you played, but they will remember how you made them feel."
