Violinist Irena Benak met her future husband at a concert in Serbia, came to Charlotte to visit him and stayed. Now she is building her name here from the beginning.
Irena Benak arrived in Charlotte a seasoned violinist who had to start over. "I came here with years of experience performing internationally, but I also had to build my name again in a new country and a new community," she says.
She was six years old, in Berlin, when she started playing the violin. A year later she entered her first competition.
"From there, music became much more than something I simply enjoyed," she says. "It became the path I wanted to follow."
As she describes it, that path ran through years of classical training, orchestra performances, large stages, television appearances and many other musical projects. It also ran, in a way she calls "completely unexpected," to Charlotte.
After a music tour in Canada, she met the man who would become her husband at a concert in Serbia. A few months later she came to Charlotte to visit him. "What was supposed to be a visit became a whole new chapter of my life," she says. She stayed, they married, and Charlotte became home. The couple now has a baby daughter.
What she calls one of the most unforgettable moments of her career came in September 2024, less than a year after she moved to the United States, when she performed at the White House, she says.
"Walking through the gates, being welcomed by the Marines, and realizing where I was felt almost surreal," she says. "I had been in America for less than a year, building a completely new life and career from the beginning, and suddenly I was standing inside the White House as a musician."
She performs today under the name Irena Violin, playing live performances and special events around Charlotte and beyond. She pairs her classical background with what she calls "a modern, expressive performance style," and a performance can be classical music, modern covers or a high-energy show.
She says she does not simply play songs. "I read the room, connect with the audience, and create an experience that feels personal to that moment."
Her advice to other musicians comes from the same place. "Practice until you know your instrument, but when you step on stage, stop thinking about perfection and communicate something," she says. "People may not remember every note you played, but they will remember how you made them feel."
She is grateful, she says, for "how warmly Charlotte has welcomed me," and wants to keep growing as an artist, collaborating with other musicians and organizations and "becoming an even stronger part of the community I now call home."
