For Anthony Vasquez, music has never been a hobby he picked up. It is the language he has spoken since before he can remember.
"Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember," he says. "I started singing when I was around four years old, performing at local festivals, community events, and anywhere I had the chance to share my voice."
Born in Matthews and raised in the Charlotte area, Anthony grew from a kid singing at neighborhood festivals into a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and bandleader. A turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he finally had the time to teach himself guitar. What started as a creative outlet became a calling. Over the next few years he added bass and drums, and began blending the styles that had always moved him: Latin music, Latin rock, blues, and pop.
"I enjoy crossing genres because I believe great music has the power to connect people from different backgrounds and generations," he says. That belief became his tagline: bringing people together through unforgettable live music inspired by Latin roots, blues, and pop.
Today Anthony leads his own band, playing festivals, cultural celebrations, restaurants, private events, and community gatherings across Charlotte and beyond. The work is a family affair. His younger brother Alan performs alongside him, and his father, Alvaro, who first introduced the brothers to music, manages the act. "Together, my family has created a true team," Anthony says.
His path has also made him a teacher. He gives guitar lessons and has worked as an instructor at Guitar Center and at Music & Arts, helping students build confidence and find the right instruments. "Music is meant to be shared," he says. "Whether I'm performing on stage, making music, or teaching someone their first chords, my goal is always the same: to bring people together."
One night stands out above the rest. At a Juanes concert at The Fillmore Charlotte, Anthony held up a poster that read, "My dream is to play with you." The Colombian star noticed it and invited him on stage. By Anthony's account, it was the first time the artist had ever brought a fan up to play, and the moment traveled far beyond the venue, drawing coverage from local Charlotte news and media in Colombia. "Standing on stage with an artist who had inspired me was a dream come true," he says, "a reminder of the power of believing in your goals."
That is the advice he passes along to anyone chasing something of their own. "Dreams can become reality when you put your heart into what you do," he says.
When he is not performing, Anthony is finishing his last year of college, working toward a business degree, and getting outside for a game of soccer.
