Charlotte's first Wegmans opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, at 11550 North Community House Road in Ballantyne. The store is 110,000 square feet, and the company says it will employ about 450 people.

Wegmans is a family-run supermarket chain with 114 stores along the East Coast, and its stores sell restaurant-style food, from sushi and pizza to chef-made salads and sandwiches, alongside the groceries. Store manager Patrick McGuinness said in the company's announcement that the team has "put a lot of care into hiring and training."

Opening day

If you drive Community House Road, this is the part to know. WSOC-TV, citing The Charlotte Observer, reported on September 24 that Wegmans is preparing for a large crowd and is working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police to direct traffic around Community House Road. According to the same report, shoppers will be allowed to camp out in the parking lot before the doors open, and there will be portable restrooms.

What's inside

Axios Charlotte toured the store in May, five months before opening, and reported these among its features:

  • An outdoor play area for kids on artificial turf, with a covered patio where adults can buy single-serve beer and wine from a mobile cart. According to Axios, Ballantyne is the first Wegmans to try it.
  • A cheese shop with more than 400 varieties, where employees crack open 80- to 90-pound wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano.
  • Sushi rolled to order while you watch.
  • A French-inspired café with 180 seats inside and 106 outside.
  • Separately, a "Market Grill," where you order from a menu by QR code and the food is brought to your table. Axios reported that Ballantyne is only the second Wegmans to have one.
  • "Cookie Land," with 40 to 50 kinds of self-serve cookies.
  • More than 700 kinds of fruits and vegetables, more than 1,000 wines and 500 beers.
  • 15 staffed registers and 23 self-checkouts.
